HTC Expands Towards UMPC

HTC is a company I’m sure we're all familiar with, they design and manufacture many Pocket PC and Smartphone devices that you see on the market today. Just to name a few popular ones we have the HTC TyTN (Cingular 8500/8525, O2 XDA Trion, T-Mobile MDA Vario II, i-mate JASJAM, Qtek 9600, Dopod CHT9000/838 Pro, Orange SPV M3100) HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125, T-Mobile MDA/MDA Vario, Dopod 838, i-mate K-JAM, O2 XDA mini Pro/minis, Orange SPV M3000, Vodafone VPA II compact) HTC Excalibur (T-Mobile Dash, O2 Xda Cosmo, Dopod C720W).

But now HTC expands their market by officially announcing their new ultra portable PC, the HTC Shift. By what we can see from the picture it has a sliding keyboard and tilting display, not a common feature in UMPCs. Engadget had some hands on with the HTC Shift and from what they could tell the sliding and tilting screen didn’t feel rock solid and the keys on the keyboard was a little too compacted. No word yet on pricing but expect to see it on the market during Q3 of this year.

Here are some specs taken from Engadget:
  • VIA CPU (the one we tried had a 1.2GHz chip)
  • Vista business (yes, it was running Aero)
  • 7-inch sliding, tilting wide-touchscreen
  • 30GB drive
  • Tri-band UMTS / HSDPA, quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
  • Biometric reader, front-facing camera
