Skype has just released a new beta version (2.2) of their software for PPC's.
From the forum announcement it looks like the new version can better utilize low-clock speed CPUs (like the one in the ever-popular 8125) in addition to better Today screen integration and personalization options.
If you don't already know, Skype allows free calls to landlines through the end of 2006 - which means you still have nearly 20 days to try out this service!
**Skype uses your data connection to make voice calls; be sure to have an unlimited data plan!**
**Known issues with the beta running on ppc phone editions here:
The biggest two seem to be 1) Audio comes out over the external speakers, not the phone speaker. (They recommend you use a wired headset) and 2) Bluetooth headsets are (mostly) not compatible at this time.
[update] while free SkypeOut expires at the end of this year, you can get a full 12 months of unlimited calls to anyone in the US and Canada, landline or cellphone, for only $14.95! This special 50% off pricing is only available until January 31, 2007, so act now! Info here
I had an issue with this release. I loaded it and as now still have it loaded to double check my issue, but it's about to come off. Unlike the previous ver. This one does not like getting disconnected from the internet. I have wireless in my room and let Skype and messenger run. This way if my wife or someone wants to get a hold of me they can just IM me and I don't have to lug my laptop back and forth. Oops I forgot to mention I work out of the country. Well I don't turn the wireless off on my phone when I leave my room to go to work. It will loose connection and so will MSN and Skype. No biggie. When I go back to my room the wireless reconnects and then I just re log into the services. Well the new Skype tries to re connect to the internet the entire time your wireless is offline. I noticed my hip feeling hot and pulled out my phone. It was VERY warm and the battery was almost dead. The battery it's self was what was making the phone hot. It was also running very sluggish as well. I noticed Skype was trying to connect. To make a long story short, it seems if you loose connection while Skype is running it will try to reconnect and not stop till it had a connection. I would guess this uses most of the CPU resources (hence the sluggish operation) and consumed almost the entire battery in about an hour (probably the reason the battery was so damn hot). I tested this several times with the same results.
The enhancements are worth holding onto the newer version for me. Just exit the app before going out of range. Running on an O2 Flame with reasonable satisfaction. Just awaiting Skype ppc video call capability to maximise the device specs.
