If you have a Pocket PC Phone with WiFi, then you are already half way to being able to use all SIP-based VoIP providers on your phone! All you need is BeWip, new phone software for your Pocket PC.
"What is BeWip?
BeWip is a softphone (software phone) for mobile phones, which integrates in a single interface both VoIP and standard cellular telephony (GSM, CDMA, UMTS, etc.).
BeWip relies on standard services and protocols provided by telecommunications operators. This software gives you the ability to use on your mobile, the services you normally use at home. For example, it is possible to call your contacts over landlines or cellular telephony, and thus on your mobile at a price close to what you would pay if you were at home on your own landline, as defined by your SIP operator.
BeWip allows you to use your WiFi on your Pocket PC with VoIP providers... if you use Skype and are in the US or Canada, then yes, you wouldn't waste your minutes (as long as you are connected to the internet that is).
Could you guide some more on this technology? I have got an XDA Mini S in the UK and would like to know how can I use it? Do I need a VOIP account with providers like Vonage? I am using AOL DSL broadband so will I be able to connect with it?
Maybe you can help me. My phone system is VoIP (Vonage) and all my voicemails are delivered by email as a .wav file. For whatever reason when I download the file on my 8125 the media player will not play it.
I get an error message that the "audio file format is not supported." I tried saving the file to the main memory and storage card first with no luck.
Would the BeWip program help? I registered for it anyway.... Any other ideas?
I've got an old Audiovox XV-6600 Pocket PC phone running WM 2003 2d Ed. I refuse to update to any newer phone because they all have smaller screens - so I buy one refurbed XV-6600 after another. The only new PPC phone I've seen with a full-sized screen is the O2 Flame, which doesn't have fast internet connectivity (the XV-6600 has EVDO and can do 800 kbps).
I've been experimenting with Skype on my phone for the past week or two, and once I determined that it would run using the EVDO connection, I got a refurbed WiFi card for its SD slot. That works fine, but my experience using Skype over WiFi is that the phone's processor (which I've juiced to 530mhz with a utililty) is running to keep up with the demands being made on it - long delays when I try to interact with menus or carry on a conversation.
What I'm looking for is a smaller, more efficient program than Skype's application. Does this program meet that description?
I don't want to have to subscribe to a monthly service - I like Skype's "phonecard" approach - you let it charge you for $10 worth of calls and when you use those up you charge it up again. If this software is "lighter" than Skype's and either works with Skype or with a service like it, I'd be interested.
