WiFi info:
I eliminated my GPRS and got the WiFi service working on my PPC... the only problem I have is that it is working as a WiFi detector, and asking me if i want to sign into whatever WiFi broadcast it detects, even when it's already connected to a LAN! I'm still looking for the setting that will make it calm down, and have decided to keep WiFi off unless I really want to be connected to a specific LAN and can "dismiss" every other LAN in the area.

No, I don't want to snoop on my neighbors!

i have two questions: what does that software do exactly? This is my first pocket Pc and i'm overloaded with information. I only know the basics.

Secondly, I didn't sign up for the internet plan with my MDA because I don't really need it. When i'm in school, I use the wifi to connect to their network and when i'm home, I connect to my own, here's where it gets tricky, when i'm in an area where someone has internet service or something, it asks me if I want to connect to them. What does that mean exactly? Does it mean i'm connecting to their internet or does it mean that i'm just connecting to their computer? I understand the wifi when it comes to my own computer and such, but I don't understand how I can connect to someone elses, it asks me do i want to connect to someones unsecured internet and if I click yes, nothing happens, do I have to be in a certain range of the service? I try to connect to my offices and nothing happens. Can someone give me more information about this? Thanks guys

Hi, janellemda!
WiFi is a radio signal based networking system that allows you to connect your computer (be it desktop, laptop, or Pocket version) to a local area network. As you drive around, your MDA is detecting that there are WiFi routers available... some are protected against unauthorized access, and others aren't (we call these last ones "open" networks)...
Your MDA (and mine) have been programmed to try to access any and all WiFi signals they detect... when you say "yes" to their question of whether or not to access the WiFi, they try to connect, and if it's an open network, they'll do so.
So now you are connected to a network... if that network has unprotected computers on it, you could actually look at their files... if the network is connected to the Internet directly, you can use the Internet connection as if it were your own...

In my college, the WiFi is password protected, and they don't allow you to snoop in the computers... but Internet is available and free!
In my house, the WiFi signal is encrypted, and you need a special, long, password for the router... can the encryption be broken? sure, if you really want to invest a lot of effort into it... but in general, it's pretty good security.
My school, though, doesn't use encryption... it simply requires the computer to be pre-approved as a network user in order to allow the connection.... a better security system that Win 98 computers can't work with... (this is coordinated by the network manager).
My brother, on the other hand, is paranoid about security, so he used a 128 bit password, as well as the authorized user system, before wiring his house for Ethernet and eliminating WiFi... :-/

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
Manny

KnightRider: I think not, though you might be able to get the sim card to work... the question is: will they give you tech support?

Good luck with your idea of using a Treo 700wx !!! I'm sure it'll have more memory than our MDA!

Not so much. The 700w and the 700wx are strictly CDMA phones. This means they are not compatible with GSM networks, which is what T-Mobile uses. (They don't even take SIM cards).

If you want a WM Palm device that will work on the T-Mobile network, you will probably have to wait for the 750v (currently avaiable in Europe):

The tri-colored screen that you saw was the bootloader mode screen. Bootloader mode is used for ROM updates, radio stack updates, etc. You should, actually, be able to get your device into bootloader mode by soft resetting while holding the camera button, although this does you no good unless you actually have an update the requires you to use bootloader mode. When a device is in bootloader mode, a normal soft reset returns it to the standard mode.

Anyhow, has anyone been able to get this update to work on the Cingular version of this phone? I would be very interested if you have.

Smile T-Mobile 8125

Got some pics of a wizard with an identity crisis. On the outside it looks like a Cingular 8125, but deep down inside it feels that it's a T-Mobile MDA

I got this update working on my 8125 w/o any issues. Soft reset the device, followed the instructions in the RUU, and that was that.

with only limited access i'm assuming that this means no access to your photo album or call tones on the MDA correct?

If you are wondering about the TZones connection for the MDA, Billy, you are correct: no access to your photo album or call tones...

By the way, everyone, I had my MDA replaced because it was dropping audio, and it really seems to be another machine: even my bluetooth is behaving differently... don't know why, though...

I'll let you know of the major differences soon...

please help

can someone please tell me when this rom was released? I want to make sure I'm not putting an older rom in my phone I have version (2.26.10.105)

also can someone let me know if updating to this rom will erase all my games, ringtones, contacts, etc....?

I have a feeling this update could posibly keep me from throwing my mda against the damn wall. My phone is always searching for reception randomly, in random spots.

pineappled, you have to download the update to your desktop, sync your desktop with your mda, and run the update from your desktop.

hope that helps~

Welcome, Ib5989!
Let's see.... WiFi is a technology for connecting computers in a local network that works with radio waves, and is different from the cell phone signal...
BlueTooth is a radio application to connect headphones and such to a computer...
A2DP is a BlueTooth "subprogram" that allows you to use stereo headphones/headsets and answer phone calls while you are at it...

MDA is a MultipleDesignationApparatus, since it is being sold under a number of names worldwide, with very small design changes between each other... such as the 8125...

God luck, and let us know how it goes!
