Dang, talk about competition. With the news of Skype giving out PC-to-phone calls for free until the end of the year, AOL felt like they needed to one-up not only Skype but all the other instant messaging guys.
AOL just introduced AIM Phoneline, a free service that issues you a free local US number so that your friends can call you for free on your PC. They are marketing it to the privacy-sensitive crowd, letting people use the service as a psuedo-number per say. Whatever you want to do with it is fine by us, we guess as long as it falls within AOLs terms and conditions (which can be a doozy by the way). The great thing is that you don't have to be a paying AOL member to use this service. As long as you have an AIM screenname (or want one) then you are good to go. We just recently tried to register but it told us to try again later. Either they haven't sorted out the kinks, they are out of numbers, or the servers are extremely busy. We will try try again.
