Since the handheld world seems quiet today, the editorial team thought it might be good to post up some more general "oooooo" affecting tech news. So, the following article on the 260,000 dollar, turret style, joy stick controlled, machine gun: FPS gamers, a moment of silence.
Remote guns have apparently been "big talk" around the Pentagon for sometime but bottom line, people have always been more adept at sitting behind the turret (think the Humvees from "Blackhawk Down") and pivoting. Its been "too hard" to use videocamera feeds to recognize targets and react fast enough.
Enter the CROWS. With the advent of FPS (first person shooter) games in the early 90s and the huge percentage, relatively, of those gamers now entering the Army, the apparent "difficulty" -- unnaturalness -- of using a camera feed for targeting has now disappeared. General infantry are demonstrating extreme prowess in identifying potential threats and when necessary, quickly eliminating them.
Great...just what we need...remote controlled killing. It's bad enough that kids take the stupidity of "Jackass" and that ilk and work to emulate it. Now, we can train them to be killers with video games and turn them loose with real guns...
I don't deny that ANYTHING that can save the lives of our military members by keeping them out of harms way is good and should definitely be investigated, but could you imagine this thing in the hands of some disgruntled student a la Columbine?
Is that it's intended use? Nope...but since you can find plans on how to build nuclear weapons online, why not something like this.
Of course, I still think that wars should be fought by the leaders and not the "grunts" because if they had to face the fear, there would be a whole lot less war in the first place.
