SMS has inherited a new purpose in terms of advocacy campaigns and voting capabilities. One keen example of how SMS is being used to get users to cast their votes is Music for America’s (a nonprofit advocacy for young-voter registration) TXTVoter campaign. The TXTVoter will launch starting this June with some of my favorite musicians and bands, like Green Day and Death Cab for Cutie, with a positive/political cause encouraging concert goers to register in the middle of the concert. SMS has already been used by South African officials by sending registration and polling information to more than 180,000 voters… sure beats sending info through snail-mail.
The basic idea behind this global movement is that though people may not have direct access to computers, almost everyone has a cell phone or SMS enabled device. Music for America is about being a catalyst for music bands to communicate their political message and make a difference amongst the youth culture. That rocks my socks off…
