Getting started on wifi?

Can anybody make some recommendations on the best hardware to use for setting up a home wifi network?
I'm looking to connect 2 desktop pc's (one with a network card one without), both have win2k as the OS.
I'm am also looking to get my hands on a sd wifi card for my ipaq 3970 (PPC2002) although I'm looking to upgrade my device as soon as HP decent release a decent upgrade (not the h6300 ).
Am I right in thinking that I can get away with using a single router rather than an access point and wifi card?
Generally I'd like to remote control my pc via my device and surf the net.
I presently have Bt's ISDN dial up service although I'm also looking to upgrade that to broadband, possibly virgins!
Ta for any advice

Even though the Linksys is a pretty good and popular router, I am not recommending them these days because when you throw a desktop computer into the mix, there is a tendency for the Linksys to disconnect a node after a couple minutes. Personally I use the Belkin and it's never down. It connects 3 desktops and my PPC when I'm around. No problem! It's a bit more money though...

There is quite a few out there, I think Hawk (another PPCA member has the socket low power usage card and I recall him saying he loves it. )

Absolutely, in fact, that is recommended. As long as you aren't trying to reach too terribly far you should be fine.

I use the SanDisk SDIO card and it works great. I have a linksys router and it does need a reboot every now and again due to dropped connections. I bought my daugher a Microsoft Router for her apartment and it works great...

Thanks for the advice.
I've drawn up a shopping list of products (mostly Belkin, as they seem to get good reviews and having used the support before, I've found them to be very useful).
I'm just waiting now for a couple of paychecks to clear

I read a review just last night on the PPC so don't have the link handy but what they said about the Belkin 802.11g router said it spanked all the other home routers. I just happened to have a coupon when I bought mine so I guess it was just fate.

Hmmrph!
Yeah go on rub it in.
At least by waiting longer I will:
1. not by some crusty kit that doesn't work half the time.
2. When it does work is either very sluggish or drops the connection
3. drops in price
OK! so I'm probably going to by the kit just before a new standard is released and support is dropped .
I don't care I tell you, I don't care, (not listening now, lalalalalalala. :? )
