Tooth crowns are now available in variety of materials

Using dental fillings may not be the correct treatment for some forms of tooth decay. In such cases, a Tooth crown is placed over a tooth so as to protect the tooth from further destruction.

When we visit a dentist, he treats tooth decay mostly by a root canal treatment. Small decays can be treated by cleaning the tooth surface and also placing an appropriate filling. But when the decay has reached the root pulp, an RCT or root canal treatment is done.

Once a tooth has undergone RCT, it becomes brittle and is susceptible to breaks and fractures. To avoid this, the tooth is covered by a dental or a Tooth crown. It may also be used to restore fractured teeth, or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth. Thus a crown is nothing but a dental restoration that covers or "caps" a tooth. This is done to restore the tooth of its normal shape and size. This also improves the appearance of a tooth.

Before a tooth crown is placed, the tooth has to be prepared. In order to do this, the thickness of the crown is decreased so that the fabricated Tooth crown can be fitted onto the prepared tooth. An impression of the teeth and gums are taken and sent for fabrication to the dental lab. Sometimes, a temporary crown maybe fitted over the prepared tooth until the permanent crown is ready. During the subsequent visit, the dentist removes the temporary crown and fixes the permanent crown onto the tooth. This is done with the help of dental adhesive materials. After fixing the crown, the fit and bite are checked.

There are dental crowns that are made for functional and aesthetic purposes. Metallic crowns are extremely durable and can be applied with less removal of the natural tooth than all porcelain or ceramic crowns. But nowadays, they are not preferred for aesthetic reasons.

A porcelain crown is more aesthetically appealing for its color, consistency and translucency. This resembles the natural tooth very closely. A porcelain crown does not undergo abrasion or discoloration. For maintaining tooth crowns, proper oral hygiene has to be maintained. Everyday brushing and flossing are very essential.
