The end is at hand for PDA's?

Just found this forum. First impression is good!
I am interested in PDA's, particularly for outdoor use.
I have used Handspring Visor, Sony Clie, Axim 51 and at present Ipaq2495. When I was shopping for my last one, I was shocked at the lack of choices. The next one will have to be a phone and a camera as well??

yes indeed there is just no market for having two devices any more. which in the long run is going to be better but the ppc phones have a little catching up to do, the axim is a perfect example as you can get one for around $400 new and the closest phone ppc would be the o2 flame with a price tag of about $1000 so right now theres a transition but i think once ipaq, hp, dell and a few others get with it there will be some good competion and price wars. i say in about 2-3 years we will see 600mhz processor 128mg ram and atleast a gig of rom standard.

The PPC stand-alone market is shrinking, but as HP's announced WM6 line shows, it is not completely dead. There remains enough call for that form factor (dual memory slots and a large screen in a small overall size) to keep a couple of models alive. Personally I still prefer two devices as long as I can have a wireless connection between them for data access. My Toshiba with its 4" VGA display is a true notebook replacement; that is not the case for any converged device I have seen due mainly to the small displays. I guess I'm not the only one who feels this way.

The market is definitely niche, but it is still there and one or two makers will keep serving it at least for a while. I think it will be supported more by business users, but that will keep it alive for individual users as well. There are just too many restricted business and government situations where cameras and outside electronic access are banned for the stand-alone form factor to go away completely, and Symbol is not the answer for everyone. No, look for HP to continue to offer a couple of PPC models for some time to come in response to ongoing needs of the very important business side of their customer base, and that will keep them available to the consumer side as well. Hurrah for our side!!

true i forgot about the buisness side were cameras become an issue but there att and others require htc to make non camera models to adhear to this situation take the 8500 in effect. there is a definate transition going on though. more vga displays are more common on ppc phone platform as well as larger displays. some examples would be htc advantage, and shift. O2s flame and as soon as the market for better batteries comes about the non phone ppc would transition i believe to the micro computer side that are running full versions of windows like the oqo model o2 but this is just an opinion not a fact.

just to show that there is a trend aproaching

The price point for micros running full Windows will need to fall at least by half before they can be considered replacements for the PPC stand-alone form factor. I think that we will continue to see releases from HP that keep the PPC alive for a couple of generations. It is not a bandwagon others are likely to jump on but there is ample market to keep one major player interested.

For consumers, things have clearly shifted, but businesses still create a demand for the PPC form factor and price point.
