I have a wireless router/modem and my HP connects to it just fine. I've also taken it around to some local hotspots like Barnes & Noble and it also recognizes available networks and connects without problem.
When I call up Internet Explorer however, I get a variety of error messages. The usual one is "Unable to connect. You have no modem entires created, and no network card present."
That message gives a link to "settings" and going there and clicking on "Add a new modem connection," I'm taken to a screen with "My Connection" as the default choice and another choice box which gives me the choices
of a Hayes Compatible on COM1, a Bluetooth Dialup Modem, and a Generic IrdA. None of these choices make the slightest bit of sense. I have a DSL 2wire wireless router/modem and surely the hotspots where I've tried it are not using a Hayes dialup modem.
Various other error messages have come up which usually give the option going to the "settings" screen, which takes me always to the above useless choices.
Sometimes, instead of the various error messages which point me to settings, I get the message "The page you are looking for cannot be found." That happens when I try to get IE to take me to microsoft.com or or google.com, for example.
I have tried all the various settings on the 2wire re type of
authentication, firewall, etc., and also tried disabling everything on the router. These changes can affect whether the PDA is wirelessly connected or not, but nothing I do allows me to access the internet. In the wifi hotspots the same thing happens - connected but no access.
Back to my question: I read a lot about the necessity to do soft resents frequently with PDA's. Is my problem that when I make a connectivity change setting in the PDA such as when changing authentication or encryption settings (when trying to comply with the demands of the error messages), should I be doing a soft reset after making any change in order to get the change to take affect?
I'm really frustrated with this thing.
I can surf over the internet when the PDA is in the cradle.
I have bought the WM5 software for the HX4700 but have not tried to install it yet since much of the advice I'm encountering is that it won't help me with my internet access issue and also that it is "buggier" than 2003SE.
Is that true?
I've been to Microsoft's Mobile website and tried to download the tutorial on 2003SE. It's not there anymore. This world of the PDA is truly a "figure it out yourself" place . . . no wonder the PDA is a dying device.
