Hi, I'm new to this forum (looking forward to it!) and have a question which I'm sure has been asked before but havn't found the answer yet. My son is in the service and will be stationed in Afganistan. We all have an 8125 with cingular but as I'm sure you can guess...they have NO service there. He will however have access to the internet via a satallite conection. I'm wondering if he can use this connection via his 8125 to make calls over the internet to land lines here in the states. I'm aware of Skype and that may be the answer. But does anyone know of any other possible solution? My son will be stationed there for at least the next year, so this is important to me. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

suggest you have him unlock his 8125 and put a local Afgan GSM prepaid chip (hopefully they exist) in it just for emergencies, then have him TURN OFF the phone function and use skype to call family in the USA for close to nothing if he can access the internet via a wifi signal presumably within his base area. there are three gsm providers there but I don't know if they have prepaid systems.
if you want to call him, it's more complicated but doable if he's online at the time. good luck, Miguel
PS, I use it this way in Mexico & other vacation spots to avoid phone charges home. I turn OFF the cingular signal so that it doesn't use Cingular's edge network that would result in charges.
