the phone is definitely a solid upgrade from the 8125. the sliding keyboard has the perfect amount of resistance when u slide it out. also, the keyboard feels just a lil more comfortable when u compare to the 8125. i like the fact that it gives u access your radio features (ie wifi, phone) right on the keyboard. of course the front facing video cam was pointless...but when 3g is available, that will be the phone to have. the one thing that i didnt like was the fact that it uses a microSD card as opposed to a miniSD card like the 8125...so a quick upgrade experience aint happenin if anybody was intending to do it that way. the audio output isnt as loud as the 8125, given that the 8125 has the "surround sound" speakers.
outside of that, its pretty much the same thing as any other pocket pc w/ wm5 on it. i didnt have a chance to really test the 400mhz processor, by seein how it would handle snes emulators w/ sound and multiple apps running (i thought it would be worth a shot considering that with an overclocked 8125, the phone crashes sometimes when playing with sound).
on a random note, a major plus was that aside from htc's branding, there was no other company name on the phone...it looked good.
im definitely gonna consider buying the htc tytn as opposed to cingular's 8525 thats supposed to be coming out in the next 2 weeks or so (for $540+ w/o contract). Even with the price difference, i think in the long run it'll be worth it.
we'll see..

Everyone
I chose the Cingular 8525 over the TyTN because of price, Cingular is $399 before arm-wrestle plus $100 credit for porting Tel # from another carrier.
It is my 1st WinMob device. Others, Handspring 65k color (Model?) 1 year, Kyocera 6035 (VZW) 1 year, Kyocera 7135 (20+ of 'em off eBay <grn>) almost 4 years. Overclocked and very cool Palm software for videos and "stuff," but the 33mhz Dragon Ball was over its head.
The 8525 (17Nov) has been an intellectual handful over the weekend, but I'm more impressed each hour it's studied/used. The old Palm OS is a more intuitive interface, I think. BUT, this thing looks like it can be useful immediately box stock. Then, the 400mhz processor & tips, tricks & techniques plus 3rd party apps should make it a KILLER! pda with WorldPhone capability.
Cingular will unlock it at 3 months . . . or sooner if you threaten them with account extintion. <grn>

Best,
the names Eyerone as in "irony" but i knew what u meant...lol.
but yeah both phones are pretty much identical...i think imma go with the unlocked TyTn, thus avoiding the tel # porting issue/fee...and overall i like the look of the TyTn over the 8525...
but thats just me..

Eyerone,
Name gaff apologies.
Today is Day 4 and I really, really like this machine.
I wasn't real clear in the last post, but here (Colorado), Cingular gives a $100 credit for Tel # port. Thus, the 8525 is $450 less $50 mail-in rebate less $100 port credit . . . $299.
Not so bad considering my first Handspring pda was $500 just 5 years ago . . . gasp!
I just got my 8525 today. I upgraded from that POS 8125. It always froze up or took too long run small apps. But ne ways I love my 8525 already I ran plenty of apps n' music to test the ability of the phone n' I can already tell the difference. Come talk to me if you wanna' know more about my hands on experience with the Hermes. DOWN WITH THE POS 8125!!!!!!
I also am in deep thought about these 2 phones...I am heading towards the TyTn, simply because it was a video cam on the front. In the near future I believe cingular will be deploying an optional plan for video calling, as its already run overseas. But it could be some time and you will have to unlock the phone.... which you can do free here (dont buy the program on ebay)... HTC Hermes SIM Unlock if anyone has any info about the video calling or if cingular is going to come out with an upgrade to 8525 that inclues a video cam, cuz if im going to buy a phone for 500 bucks and that is coming out very soon, might as well get that feature.
Ok, just lost my paragraph, so starting again...I want to know if everyone has heard of or experienced the same problem I've had with the 8125. Couldn't find it in a thread. I got the first one in August after drowning my Treo 650 in a glass of water (so sad). Was totally happy with it until the charge port started getting loose and I had problems charging it, until one day it just completely snapped off. I brought the phone into a Cingular store and was told that someone came in the day before with the same problem. After speaking with 8 different people at Cingular and HTC I learned that this was a known defect in the phone and they would give me no problems replacing it. So they did. That was 3 weeks ago. Don't you know that my brand new 8125, which I have been treating oh-so-gingerly, also has a failed me. Without even a warning jiggle, I went to charge the phone and saw that the charge port was rollin around in there like it was forcibly removed with a tiny, port-hating instrument. After 1 1/2 of call transfers b/w Cingular and HTC today they have agree to send me the 8525 cuz I'm NOT dealing with this BS again. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem or heard of it with the 8125, or more importantly, if it's been remedied with the dawn of the 8525?
