Loaded WM5 last night. Loaded a regedit to follow Tim Nguyen's Speed up Windows Mobile 5.0 advice. Seems to work OK. WM5 did not speed up my Ostia GPS device.
Glad to hear you aren't having any trouble with the upgrade. It does seem a little hit and miss for some people at the moment, especially since those of use who have had the device for awhile have lots of software that isn't necessarily WM5 ready.
Which Ostia GPS device do you have? I currently have the GPS unit that came with Streets & Trips and a CF adapter for it, and the Ostia software & maps. That was part of the reason I avoided upgrading, I wasn't sure if it would work at all, and some people have reported slowdowns with GPS in general.
JDTagish: I have the SDI GPS from Pharos and Ostia 7.5. I have not spent alot of time using the GPS since the upgrade but it seems to work OK. Still takes too long to get the GPS to lock into the signals. Pharos has a jumpstart program for the ARM processor but it locked up the 4700.
Do you have the USB GPS from Streets & Trips and use a CF usb adapter?
I am having issues with wi-fi connections to the internet. Seems I need to assign a static IP as the dhcp setting is not working. Plus it seems very slow.
Yes, the USB GPS with the CF Adapter. Actually, I hardly use it, but it was part of the reason I bought the 4700, because it had dual card slots so I could still use it if I wanted to. Around home, I pretty much know where I'm going, but I still liked the "idea" of GPS, and I used it a bit when I first got it, but haven't found myself "needing" to use it as much as I thought I would.
Now, I may be adding a new device to my lineup, the iMate JasJar. There is a possibility I may get one today. I'm about 70% hoping that the deal goes through, and 30% nervous about actually doing it. The only reason for the hesitation is that IF it were to go blooey on me, I can't really get waranty coverage for repairs. But, it would be a WM5 device, and then I wouldn't have to worry about doing the upgrade on the 4700.
I've heard other people having the same issues, that WiFi acts up with WM5 on the 4700 as well. I think having a device that was designed with that OS in mind may be better...I certainly havn't heard people complain about the HTC Universal anywhere near as much as with say the Axim X51V and with all the issues with the WM5 upgrade for the 4700, I know I'm not in a big rush to load it and test it.
I do hope it goes well for you, and that you can get the kinks worked out of the upgrade!
