XP SP2: 50 Apps Listed as "affected" by Upgrading

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 842242 is pointing to some 50 applications that "seem to stop working after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 ".
"SUMMARY
After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), some programs may seem not to work. By default, Windows Firewall is enabled and blocks unsolicited connections to your computer. This article discusses how to make an exception and enable a program to run by adding it to the list of exceptions. This procedure permits the program to work as it did before the service pack was installed. "

The big ones on my list: Visual Studio, FTP servers and Arcserve...hmmm...I might just pass on this altogether. I've had enough headaches for one week.

Ohh, I LOVE this one! The title says it all:
"Some applications SEEEEEM to stop working after installing XP SP2"
OK. . Let's analyze that.
Me: Hello, Microsoft? Yes. . Umm, I just installed Service Pack 2 for XP on 4000 clients on my network, and I have some applications that aren't working.
M$: Okay, thank you for calling Select Support sir. I understand from your statement that you have some applications that SEEEEEM to have stopped working after installing XP2SP2. Is that correct?
Me: No. . I have applications that will not launch. you know, like my main e-mail client.
M$: Oookkaaay. . . (typing in background) Client. . .Has. . . Applications. . . That. . . Seem. . . To. . Not. . Work. . After. . Installing. . XPSP2. . . Hangon one second and let me get you to a Tier Three support specialist.
M$: Hello sir? My name is Allah, and I am with Tier 3 Tech Support. What seeeeeems to be the problem?
Me: Okay, it seems that someone set up us the bomb, and all my clients are unable to check e-mails after installing XPSP2.
M$: So, you are saying that SEEEEMINGLY, some applications aren't working then?
Me: Yes. . I suppose so. .
M$: Hmm. . Okay. . Well have you contated your e-mail client vendor? Because since these applications only SEEMINGLY aren't working, I don't believe I can help you. Call us back when you have verified that they indeed are not working.

I have been using SRP 2 for some time and think the security methodology is completely wrong... home users should have a router/firewall combo unit in their home networks and control ports at that location.. corporate systems should have firewalls on their network... traveling users should have a local firewall, installed and monitored by IT not the user.

According to the list of 50 programs, Symantec is listed, but according to Symantec web site Liveupdate if run has a fix for the problem. I will let you know as soon as I get SP2.

it is not unliveable however, the security agent for XP SRP 2 can not check status on NAV 9.0 Corporate Edition (the latest release), so every time you boot it gives a a security warning.

That is very interesting, since that is the exact error that Symantec has said they have fixed. Go to there page and see what they said. I am sure you are probaly correct and Symantec has made a Boo Boo!

NAV runs fine under SP2- just change the security settings in SP2 to not monitor the anti- virus.

I've been running SP2 since RC1 and I have seen no program problems on the 5 PCs I've installed it on.

Looks like Microsoft is pushing back automatic delivery of SP2 for at least 9 days: MS SP2 Pushback

sure that is a work around... however, it is interesting that they do not play well together since Symantec was supposed to be in the test group. I was looking at plain vanilla installs for large roll outs.

I'll just live with my completely stock XP load, it runs great and I haven't had any problems with any computer doing it. I've got a great firewall and virus checker, and if anything ever dies I've got reinstalling down to a science
