The South African newspaper Cape Times had another interesting article.
Tokyo: Japanese publishers said yesterday they will launch a campaign this week to stop digital shoplifters - people who visit bookstores to photograph magazine pages with their cellphones rather than make a purchase.
The shoplifters must have a fair bit of time to be able to photo whole books and magazines. The geek in me wanders what kinda memory they have in their devices to be able to capture a whole book or magazine .
Jeez it takes enough time to scan or photocopy a small article. Wouldn't it also be kinda obvious what they were doing as presumably the shoplifters would want to check the light levels and reflection angles, prior to taking their 'shot' .
I guess the developers never saw Digital shoplifting as a issue when it was still a concept.
Not owning a camera endowed device, I hadn't realised the problem was so serious. It kinda makes all the old spy films about micro dot film etc pale in to insignifigance.

Wow. that is amazing. How much is the magazine they are photographing? In the US, the upper price range of a mag is probably $7.99 and it takes probably 45 minutes to photcopy. What a waste of time.
And who wants to read a jpg version of a book on their cellphone or computer anyway? :? We have a tough enough time reading perfectly formatted .LIT books - I can't imagine reading blurry photographs!
They are probably just copying a specific article or ad.
I think cameras in phones and PDAs and the potential for misuse will result in rules and laws that impact all devices negatively, even those without cameras. I hope I'm wrong.

I said alot of things, just don't expect me to understand it though .
When I read the article it did strike me (like a golf ball between the eyes) as being what I call an 'Aw my Gawd!' article.
As in I can't believe that people would do or be, like that, I guess hanging around on the net most days I should be immune to it by now.

One of the more popular forms of adult literature in Japan are comic books. With bold styles and large print, they lend themselves very readily to being e-copied.
Although most people who do this rationalize it "Oh, I'm just copying this one page in a recipe book (or one section of a map, or a few pages from a tour guide)," the big problem is that there is no real sense of intellectual property rights in many east Asian countries. Although the RIAA is doing its best to attack individual consumers here as well as in western countries, wholesale electronic copying and software counterfeiting are rampant problems.
I work with corporate managers in the paper industry who have no problem with the concept of buying a book and then copying the whole thing for others in their section. They don't see how they are robbing Peter to pay Paul because they've never made the connection between copyrights, royalties and their own profession.
If Addic said "Books" he meant books! Now back off!
Just kidding.
Kamikun gave me an idea. There could be these comic book "mobs" each person is responsible for photographing one picture of the comic book and posting it to the web. They would be called "book'rs" Book'r agent #1 does page 1, Book'r agent #2 does page 2 and so on. Each "agent" would be conveying by their actions how moronic they are for not paying the $3 or whatever for the actual comic.

In biz speak it's called leveraging the power of the distributed enterprise.
But yea, that's it. Everyone shoots five or 10 pages and the next day at school (or over the internet or P2P network) you compile your booty. Please note that compile your booty is a phrase that I became intensely uncomfortable with even as I was typing it. It should not be used by youths under the age of 18 and if employed for any euphemistic purposes I will disavow all knowledge of its inception.
Oh sure you guys- encourage the riff raff. I just wanted to have "riff raff" in a post.

Oh are we encouraging them? My fault. Let it be known that I am definately against this measure, especially with regards to the book Professional VB.NET, Second Edition.
Brad, they'd all fall asleep if they were copying that book.

That's all part of my plan to rid the world of book'r agents. They start photocopying books of a boring nature, fall asleep, and the police arrive, all evidence is in place for an arrest.
I feel asleep just reading the title "Professional VB.NET, Second Edition".

Hmmmm! I'm over 18, so I think I'll try that line 'compile your booty' on my missus later tonight and see if it works........................... If I'm lucky she may let sneak a peak at her photo'd womens magazine. woo hoo!
Hey, this thread deteriorated from the subject rather well

Has it gone off topic? I didn't think it went that far off, considering we were talking about how weird it would be (pathetic really) to snap pictures of books and articles using a cellphone and posting them to the web or sharing them with friends.
I too protest the claim that this thread has gone off topic. Free speech is precious and we must all cherish and protect it whenever we can.
What WAS this topic about, anyway?

Booty compilations. I resisted at first... but after awhile the phrase just seemed more pleasurable.
It was I think the broaching of a more general topic about the negative consequences of technological advancements without concurrent developments in cultures and mores to ease their adaptation into society. Such as the lack of personal inhibition or societal guilt costs in using IR and Bluetooth technology to cheat during exams or the few tacit or overt penalties for selfish behavior with personalized electronics.
Or it could be about booty compilations. Your call.

Seriously...
I'm gonna assign this as a writing topic for my corporate English class. If you guys are interested in seeing what Japanese white-collar types have to say about this you're invited to check out our class blog.
Their entries may not be up for a couple of days so "we ask that you to be waiting with pleasures."
