HTC Tytn II - VPN Connection Issues

Hey everyone!!

Bought the Tytn II over the weekend as a Standby tool for work. When a program 'falls over' after work it is required that I 'Putty' into the Unix box and investigate the problem... This part is working correctly, I establish a '3G, GPRS' connection, also a 'VPN Connection' (that I set up before hand) and start PocketPutty and it connects.

Also as part of my responsibility is to access an web page that is only visible on our intranet, to log the issue... This is where the problem comes in... As above, I connect the '3G, GPRS' connection, also the 'VPN Connection' but then when I start Internet Explorer and type in the url and press 'GO' IE drops my VPN connection and the web page fails...

The reason I know it is a setting on my phone is because when I connect my phone to my laptop via the USB cable I can access the intranet web page/application... This also work with my laptop and a external 3G modem... just my phone giving me a hard time

If you go to start-settings-connections-advance-exceptions and you type the URL as an 'exception' in the text field if you connect to that page the default VPN connection, thats the one you set up in 'My work connection' will automatically fire up... In other words, internet like normal until you hit the page and the VPN connection fires...

Well that did not solve the problem for me... thought it would, because I'm then connected to the works intranet and thus I should be able to connect to the page... but not... tested the connectivity of the VPN, when I open PocketPutty I can connect, so the connection seems fine.

Does anyone have a idea how to set up my phone's connection settings so this would work? Also tried with Opera Mini, but getting a 'Server Time out' when I connect the phone to my laptop, this method works in IE.

Thanks in advance for all the help guys, read through some post on this forum and the people around here seems to be very helpful

Regards,
Alwyn Swart

Quick question... The intranet side url ends with ..com:7777

Do you guys think the APN is blocking this port?

Good day guys!!

Been some changes in this issue of mine... spoke to the technical guys at work, seems like what I'm trying to do is not going to work, the web page is not on the intranet of our work, but rather on the intranet at our client... So if I VPN to work, they in turn VPN to our client an a connection is established this way... The reason why this method work is that a routing IP is manually set up on my laptop...

My next step was to download a 3de party VPN client, got the one from Blue Fire!! Set up the connection directly to the client, and a connection was successful. But if I open the web page it still just loads and fails... Downloaded a Ping and IP trace utility for my phone, after running that I came to the conclusion that my phone is indeed choosing the wrong adapter to go through, choosing the wrong path, ot is not going through the connected VPN connection to try and open the web page, but rather it tries to go through the 3G connection established by the phone...

Consulting a few people, it seems like a WM6 thing, the IP tables is incorrect... So now I must find a way to correctly rout my connection to the VPN one...

Any suggestions?

Actually found the problem... The problem was with MTN, the SP. I had to change my APN, suspect the default one was blocking the port... Working now 100%

Thanks for the reply!!

Hello Alwyn.. I'm having the same problem. What's the APN?
What settings did you have to change in order to keep the VPN connected after you opened Internet Explorer?
Thanks,
Nick,

Hey Nick,

The APN is basically the server the mobile phone connects to when data will be transfered...

Unfortunately you have to call your Service Provider, for me it was MTN, and ask them to enable your VPN APN...
After they have enabled it (takes about a day to be active) then change the Access Point Name (APN name) of your connection you set up to connect to the internet. On my phone it is under Start-->setting-->connections--->manage existing connection then click on the edit button, click on next and you will be on the screen to change the APN name.

Hope this helps

Alwyn
