What do you mean by "shuts down?" The screen goes blank and you have to hit the power button? It resets (reboots) itself? Other?

Yes exacltly,
The screen goes black like it normally would when left unattended but the the green light stops blinking at the top of the phone. if I tap the power button, it does not respond. I hit the power button for a sec or so and it reboots (att screen pops up and then the green winndows screen). sometimes it just shuts off right away, most of the time it is ok for a couple hours.

Thanks
Mike

Well that certainly doesn't sound very good (But I think you know that!). If the hard reset did not help it is probably not software related. After your hard reset did you reload any software or just let it run as is? If you reloaded anything it may be worth another reset and see how it works for a while.

Do you have a SD card installed? Maybe try removing that. If hardware it is about the only thing you can easily do yourself. After that, since out of warranty, it may be worth opening it up and seeing if anything looks loose.

was that replace the batery with a back up battery or is there an internal back up batery. I tried looking for schematics but could not fing them.

Also if it never goes into standby it does not have this problem. I know I have seen it but I can't find it where can I turn off the standby (WM5).

Thanks

I don't think WM5 and higher devices have a backup battery any more, but I could be wrong. Your standby/power off settings are in Start|settings|power (might be slightly different on your device)

wm5 device still have backup battery, but they use it in a different way, not as in 2003/SE device where the BBatt was for keeping the NOR memory and avoiding hard reset.
the BBatt in the cingular/kjam is next to the input/output miniUSB connector, and is a V6HR Varta NiMh 1.2v.
sometime it stops working and it makes the main battery to stop charging and/or discharging properly.

EDIT: my mistake, it's not a kjam, it's a tytn/hermes. I confused 8525 with 8125. sorry..

Ok it is possible for the cmos battery to have stopped working, But this is not a kjam it is a hermes, Kjam is produced by imate and is aka the wizard or cingular 8125.

Try a hard reset and see if this works if not try a different rom, if this still doesnt work let us know. I can replace the battery if this doesnt work let me know in a PM and I can quote you a price.

This used to happen to me as well. My solution could work for you.

I dont use the standard stock battery, i bought a double cap booster battery from Ebay. it's twice the size of a standard and comes with it's own cover to support the obesity. once in a while it'll randomly shut off.

my solution is to lay a piece of fold paper on top of the battery, put the cover on and tape the cover down.

obviously the paper provides a thickness so any unexpected motions wont dislodge the battery and the tape holds the cover down as well as makes it harder for the cover to come off.

This works for me
