Ok I will add to this and please feel free to ask questions here and not PM me as my box fills up quick with questions that can be answered in a forum. Also I encourage you to ask questions here as someone else my have the same questions and someone else might have the answer.
Ok first yes you can easily get WM6 on your Hermes, it is one of the easiest device to install a new rom on thanks to several people, being but not limited to POF, OLIPRO, VP3G and all of the cooks.
Ok first what you need to do is cid unlock your device, with this program you can also sim unlock your device it is real easy just a basic install and run. Install this program by POF and follow the unlock directions. Not an actual cab. just an exe. stick this somewhere on your device and select the exe. http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forums/file476.html
Then what you need to install Olipro v7 2.10 it allows your device to be hard spl so you can install a new rom without having to worry about bad blocks on the rom. So after cid unlocking your device install this. http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forums/file508.html
If you have not hard spl'd your device do not proceed!!!
If you install a custom rom you can brick your device if not Hard Spl'd!!!!!

Ok yet another cut and paste from xda-developers - Xda-developers this is mostly from POF and the WIKI so please dontate to POF and xda-developers - Xda-developers if you use this or find it usefull. Free HTC Hermes SIM & CID Unlocker *New* version v3a
This is a patched radio ROM that can be used to remove the Operator SIM lock and CID lock from HTC Hermes based telephones. This new version also includes HardSPL patched bootloader to show always as SuperCID and allow to flash unsigned code.
It can be used in all HTC Hermes devices, no matter which bootloader version the device is running. NOTE: For x01ht post April devices, see this thread.

Q: Will this void my warranty? A: If you select the option to "CID unlock" most probably yes. Don't select it if you just want to remove the SIM-Lock, it will be CID unlocked anyway by HardSPL but will keep your original CID if you flash any other SPL on it.
Q: After unlocking my phone my Radio and SPL versions are downgraded. Can I upgrade them? A: Yes, you can upgrade to a newer radio and newer SPL/HardSPL version. The phone will not be locked again.
Q: Will this work on Post Dec-2nd SoftBank X01HT phones? A: Hopefully yes, but your OS ROM includes software SIMLock protection (the annoying USIM screen), you can flash a non-softbank OS rom after unlocking it or read the thread for other options if you want to keep the SoftBank ROM.
Q: Will this work on Post April (white) SoftBank X01HT phones?
Yes if you have not let the SoftBank ExtROM install, otherwise your radio bootloader has been upgraded to 0182 and it is not possible to flash a radio or remove the SIMLock.
Q: Will this work if my bootloader version is SPL-1.09? A: Yes.
Q: Will this downgrade my bootloader to 1.04? A: No, it will upgrade it to Hard-SPL 1.40 which is better. You can use Custom RUU to flash any ROM on it.
Q: Will this work if my radio bootloader is HTC_BOOT 0108? A: Yes.
Q: Will it downgrade HTC_BOOT 0108 to 0107? A: No, if you have 0108 it will keep 0108.
Q: Do I need to run the new version if I already used the older version previously? A: No, your phone is already unlocked, no need to run unlocker again.
Q: After finishing the process it still asks for unlock code, what should I do? A: Make sure you have radio version 1.16 and run Herm_Unlock_v3.exe on your phone and select unlock option. If entering any unlock code fails, please repeat the unlocking process again (you did something wrong the first time).

There are several ROM upgrades available for the Hermes, you can find them in the Shipped Complete Updates wiki page, be sure to read the notes on this page before you start the ROM upgrade.
Please do NOT ask which is the best ROM for you, the Hermes upgrading forum is flooded with this question and we can't really give you an answer: a ROM upgrade is only as good as the comments it has received from the users on the forums, see the top right column of the Shipped Complete Updates table for each ROM's forum link.
Before Running the ROM Upgrade Utility
Before you run the ROM Upgrade Utility (RUU), make sure you check and do the following first:
<LI class="tightenable bottom">DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UPGRADE YOUR ROM UNTIL YOU MAKE YOURSELF AWARE OF THE DANGERS AND HOW TO MINIMISE THEM (see HardSPL and also Update Rom using MicroSD card). MANY, MANY PEOPLE HAVE MADE THEIR PHONES UNUSABLE (BRICKS) AND HAD TO PAY LARGE AMOUNTS OF CASH TO GET THEM REPAIRED. Read the relevant threads on the WIKI and forum. <LI class="tightenable top bottom">USB sync cable is connected to the computer. <LI class="tightenable top bottom">The standby and hibernation modes are disabled on the computer. <LI class="tightenable top bottom">All running applications on the computer have been closed. <LI class="tightenable top bottom">USB sync cable is connected to the phone to establish an ActiveSync connection with the computer. <LI class="tightenable top bottom">Do not interact with your device unless instructed to do so. <LI class="tightenable top bottom">Make sure your PC is stable and there are no breaks in your USB connection (i.e bad USB port) as this will result in a 'bricked' (dead) device.
<LI class="tightenable bottom">Back up your personal data from the phone to your computer using ActiveSync if you want to ensure you don’t lose any of your data. <LI class="tightenable top bottom">On your computer, run the ROM Update Utility (RUU) to install the ROM update to your phone. (The next section provides a detailed procedure on how to install the ROM Update). <LI class="tightenable top bottom">Restore your personal data back to your phone using ActiveSync. (Optional)
<LI class=tightenable>On the Welcome Screen, click Next to begin the ROM update installation.
<LI class=tightenable>On the next screen, follow the listed instructions in the dialog box first. When you are done, click Next to proceed.
Note: You should read and follow all the instructions listed before clicking Next.
<LI class=tightenable>The following message will then be displayed, indicating that the utility is verifying and acquiring information about the device as preparation for the update process. Wait for this verification process to finish.
<LI class=tightenable>Current information about the device, such as the model ID, image version and language will then be displayed. Click Update to proceed.
<LI class=tightenable>Below the device information, information about the new ROM update will then be displayed. If you are certain that you want to install the phone with the new ROM update, click Next to proceed.
<LI class=tightenable>A confirmation message then appears and shows the length of time it will take to copy the necessary files (including radio image) to the device. Click Next to begin the update.
A progress bar will run through the screen during the update process. Note: In the middle of the update process, the progress bar may stop running. This is normal as the RUU is adjusting itself to complete the update process automatically.
When you see the screen below, it means update is complete. Click Finish to exit the utility.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I have 8525 ATT that is sim unlocked, but I do not have the code. I want to do the WM6 rom update , should i run the CID unlocker first, or do the ROM upgrade then do the sim unlock afterwards?

Ok what I do is cid unlock then sim unlock the phone first. Then I hard spl it with olipro v7 then I go about installing a custom rom. Make sure you hard spl it first to prevent from getting bad blocks and possibly bricking your device. Also if you feel uncomfortable with doing this I can do all of this for you including installing a custom rom for $50 a small price to pay for insurance. All my work is guaranteed and come with a warrenty as well as full customer service.
Just asume its cid locked it doest hurt to run the program if it is already unlocked.

Okay first off I just want to say thanks for all the info that has been presented here, and how well written the step by step processes are written.
thank you Nateshuntsvegas and to all that are involved in doing so.
I did get everything done , the cid unlock, the hard spl it with olipro v7 , with no issues, then I did the Rom update to WM6 , which i got from the HTC web site , next was the HTC cab that I got from here, and it all worked perfect, no issues, I did not the radio update, but when i loaded the rom it did change the version number from the 1.27.xx.xx to the 1.54.07.00 , it still works fine I guess.
i will do more reading up on that, my brain fried last night doing all this..
anyways, on to the point of this post.............

You guys all rock. I feel like a complete noob on here but I did manage to locate and run the unlock software (ROM as you guys call it) on my just bought and locked att 8525. Now I see I can get wm6 from HTC and I guess I'll upgrade it as in why not?
Question is if I just do the standard upgrade and not one of the fancy custom cooked jobs you guys have dreamed up in the lab, do I need to do the the cid unlock, the hard spl it with olipro v7 first in case something goes wrong with the install. First off I'm not really sure what a hard spl is, but I gather it just makes your device non-revertable to a locked version or something like that. Secondly is there much risk posed by a straight forward wm6 install and/or is there much benefit in it? I mean should I bother? I just bought the device today and it seems to work fine. I looked at a comparison chart of wm5 vs. wm6 and the benefits seemed mainly corporate enterprise based.
Would love your feedback on if I should upgrade, and if so do I need to do the hard spl first or does a barely techno-versant simpleton like me need to worry about it.

From what I know, CID Unlocked is called SuperCID. YOu don't need to have SuperCID, but you can just install Hard SPL (Olipro 7), it will let you upgrade to any ROM you liked, and also you still have warranty because your CID is original (so why bother to make things complicated by making your device CID Unlocked). Am I correct???

Nates I hope you are still around to answer this, I noticed that your rom does not include a Java Midlet manager, or does it and its in the add on list if so whats it name ?
Sorry if its a dumb question but I am trying to get opera mini going since IE will not work for me with either the HTC Att 6wm rom or your Rom
Btw moblie tv and HTC weather works fine, I do not know why Internet explorer will not work

Ok put your device into bootloader mode by holding down the left ok button, the right power button and soft resting at the same time, making sure to keep the ok and power button held down until the device goes into boot loader mode which can be recognized by a tri color screen red, green, blue. Ipl info and Spl info will be at the top left and the word serial will be at the bottom of the screen. Now connect the device to computer and the word USB should now display. Now run the updater utility exe.

Ok no java manager but can upload and the rom is not mine I just added a link all thanx goes to Vp3g for that one.
Internet issues are probably due to incorrect settings which can be fixed by shogun cingular settings. And you can find dare I say cracked versions of Opera fairly easy and if you have touble you can alway email your friend nate

ok! i did as you told me to but i am still getting the same error message mayb its because i am running vista? sorry for the hassle man ive been dieing to get my hands on a tilt but cant afford it right now! so i got the 8525 for 200 in mint conditon! so im tryin to mod it all out with not that much experience on windows mobile besides the motorala i930!
