Cingular 8525 POP3 Email

Hello fellow PPC'ers,
I have a Cingular 8525 and lovin' it! But I have an issue with using POP3, more specifically, Gmail. My 8525 checks my Gmail account every 60 minutes and downloads the full message just like I set it up to. But it always clears my Inbox (on my 8525) of any email I've previously received. Does anybody know a way or a setting I may have overlooked, to ensure I keep all my email in my Inbox during a "send/receive"? I am trying to avoid tools/apps that require being loaded on my desktop, because... well, that's just not a good option for me right now. My only work around so far is to manually move my email to a different folder I've created, but I sometimes forget …a lot. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

How did you get this to work? I thought that a Java Applet had to be downloaded to receive Gmail?

This is a default behaviour with Gmail. The only workaround I know of is to download the Java version of Gmail. I think the url is http://gmail.com/app.

Mgodfroy: You are referring to gmail app that requires java on your device. But you can also configure Pocket Outlook to access Gmail. Go to Gmail support webpage to get the settings to configure Pop3 on your pda.

Linley,
Thanks for the input! Although it's not the news I hoped for, you've put my mind at ease, and I can stop pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I'll just accept the fact that this is a "feature" of Gmail and consider using the app. Thanks again.

I have never had any success trying to use Gmail's pop access with the default email program on the ppc. Basically, when I pop my mail, all I seem to get as "new mail" is messages that are Months old, and nothing new ever comes through. The only success I have had with popping Gmail is with a desktop client where I can specify the ports to be checked.

On the ppc, I've given up all hope with pop and gmail.

Am I missing something?

Here are instructions on how I setup Gmail for Pocket Outlook (Windows Mobile 5).

First you need to enable POP in Gmail from a regular PC.

Log into your Gmail account and click on “Settings”.
In the Settings box, click on the “Forwarding and POP” tab.
Under “POP Download”, select “Enable POP for all mail (even mail that’s already been downloaded)” or select "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on".
I recommend the latter if you have a lot of mail. Be sure to click "Save Changes".

Next you need to setup Gmail on your Pocket PC.

Go to the “Messaging” app, and tap “Menu” > “Tools” > “New Account”.
In the textbox enter your full Gmail address. (ex. name@gmail.com) and then tap “Next”.

Your PPC will now attempt to automatically configure your settings.
When the “Status” bar reads “Completed” tap “Next”.
In the “Your Name” textbox, enter the display name you would like others to see when they receive email from you; (ex. Smith, John T) or some other alias.
In the “User Name” textbox enter your Gmail username, and your Gmail password in the “Password” textbox. Mark the checkbox "Save password" so that you are not prompted for your password every time you check your email.
For “Account type”, select “POP3” and in the “Name” textbox type in an account name (Default is “Gmail”). Tap “Next”.
The following textboxes may be populated automatically. For the “Incoming mail” textbox, enter “pop.gmail.com” and for the “Outgoing mail” textbox enter “smtp.gmail.com”. You may leave the “Domain” textbox empty as it is not required or you can enter “gmail.com”; both have worked.
NOTE: Do not tap “Finish”.
Tap “Options”. The “check messages interval” option and “connection type” is your choice. I selected “Internet” for my connection. Tap “Next”. The checkboxes “Require SSL connection” and “Outgoing mail requires authentication” must be checked. The “Check mail from ‘x’ number of days” option is your preference. Tap “Next”. The “message header” option is also your preference. Tap “Finish”. You should now have Gmail setup, and you will now be prompted to check for new mail.

Well...

I was chatting with some fellow Gmail and WM5 users, I found there appears to be a better "work around" for the problem I mentioned at the beginning of this thread and confirmed what Linley had said, being that the problem is in fact a Gmail "feature".
For those of you having the same problem, here is the ugly work around:

Go into the "Messaging" app, find your Gmail account and select to edit the account. Tap "Next" until you come to the page with the "Options" button and select it. Continue tapping "Next" until you come to the page with the "message header" option. Select "Get message headers only" and check "Include 'x' kb of the message body" and enter "999kb" in the textbox. Tap "Finish".

Like I said, it's not pretty, but this will get you most of the message and best of all, it'll leave your messages in your inbox because it thinks there is more of the message to download. I guess all I can do now is pray the Gmail Gods will come up with a REAL solution.

Bruanor,

I hope this helps. Go into the settings of your Gmail on your PPC. Tap Next until you reach screen 5/5. Tap the Options button and Next. Check the number of days you have to display messages. Mine is set to the default 3 days.

Evq.003 - Thanks for the follow up. This will be helpful to others having the same problem.

Ah ha!!!!!
I think I have a "REAL SOLUTION" to the Pocket Outlook problem with Gmail! (See my original post in this thread)

For those of you with the same problem, here is the fix:
Go in to the messaging app on your PPC. Go to Menu> Tools> Options> Accounts> and then Edit your Gmail account. Go the page where you are prompted for "Your Name", "User Name", and "Password".(Page 2/4) In the "User Name" textbox type "recent:" in front of your username. (ex. "recent:username@gmail.com") This will instruct the server give you only the recent changes, rather than a clean slate every time you connect. I also went to "Options" (page 4/4) and set my "message header" option to "download entire message".
Note: The FIRST TIME you send/receive after making this change, Gmail will try to give you nearly every message in your inbox, so be ready to delete some unwanted messages from your PPC inbox as they arrive. After that though, Gmail and Pocket Outlook seem to work fine.

I found this "fix" in Google Groups of all places... go figure. I would post a link or state the source, unfortunately I can't remember it, but I'm sure you Google savy folks can find it.

I hope you Gmail fans find this useful.

Hi PPC'ers,
I just wanted to post a follow-up to the Gmail "recent:username" thing (see the previous threads). A fellow addict contacted me via email and brought up an issue concering the "recent:username" fix (actually, a great catch on his part). I never put two and two together, but we were both getting an error message on our 8525 that read something like "Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Check your email settings and try again." Most likely this is happening when you are trying to send mail via Gmail on your PPC. To fix the error, I ended up changing my outgoing settings. So in conjunction with using the "recent:username" option as stated in the previous post, you will also need to do the following:

Go to your messaging app then Menu> Tools> Options> Accounts> and Edit your Gmail account. Tap "Next" until you get to the page with the "Options" button (Page 4/4) and tap "Options". On page 2/3 select the checkbox that says "Use separate settings for outgoing mail". On the "Settings for outgoing mail" page, enter your Gmail username and password WITHOUT the "recent:" thing in front of your username. Check the boxes to "Save password" and "Use SSL". Leave the "Domain" textbox blank. Tap "Finish" to save your changes. Hopefully this will correct the messaging error some of you may have been getting with Gmail on your PPC.

Sorry, this is kind of off topic...

With my hotmail I have set up I shows how many messages I have Inbox, but it never updates. I connect to wifi all the time and I still (its 4/8) have mail from 4/4(date), being the newest on I have recieved. I know I have ones from today (4/8) and other precieving days but it doesnt show it on my Cingular 8125. Any Ideas?

And for the old emails, it says "download the rest of this message (3k)"
I click download message and it wont do it. Also, does this cost if I am on wifi?

thanks

Captain Pooka,

Let me answer the easier question first: The average sales rep, believes WiFi and Cingular data/internet access are one in the same and the terms are interchangeable, therefore, they will tell you WiFi access is billable. Or, they are trying to sell you a data plan. Either case, they are wrong. Cingular does NOT charge/bill you for WiFi connection. Access to wireless home networks and WiFi Hotspots are NOT billed by Cingular. But I recommend buying the unlimited data plan anyway, it saves a lot of headache and "what if's".

As far as Hotmail is concerned, if you are using Pocket Outlook for Hotmail, a couple of options you should check: Go to your messaging app then Menu> Tools> Options> Accounts> and Edit your Hotmail account. Tap "Next" until you get to the page with the "Options" button (Page 4/4) and tap "Options". On the “check messages interval” option make sure the time is set short enough that it will have time to check you mail during your WiFi connection. Mine is set to check every 60 minutes. If it is left unchecked, it will only send/receive on demand. On the “connection type” option, be sure it is set to your WiFi network. I selected “Internet” for my connection because I have unlimited data with Cingular. The “Check mail from ‘x’ number of days” option is your preference. I have mine unchecked, but I used to have it set for 10 days. It works both ways. The “message header” option should be set to "download entire message". Save your changes.

If you are still having issues, I would suggest try using the MSN app that came installed on the phone. It seems pretty friendly. Just enter your Hotmail info... I think.

Another option is to beta test Windows live. See the details posted by Linley Meslier
here.

I have followed all the responses below on my 8525 to access gmail. I can receive messages just fine. However, I am still getting the following message when trying to send. "Unable to connect to the outgoing mail server. Verify that the server name is correct, then try agin to send and receive mail." I have verified that I followed the directions above accurately and that my username password are correct. Any advice?

Thanks,

Josh23443,
Did you use the seperate outgoing settings as described in post #10 above? Make sure NOT to use the "recent:" infront of your username in outgoing settings. Also, make sure you enter your username in the required fields as username@gmail.com (your Gmail address).

EVQ.003,

Yes I did follow the steps in post 10. I didn't have the @gmail.com portion on my user name at first so I thought that was the problem. After adding that I still get the same message. Is there something on the gmail site I need to change?

Thanks for your help.

josh23443,
I'm sure you have your settings correct on the Gmail site, or you probably wouldn't be receiving mail either. But here are a few things to try (in no particular order) and a summary of my current settings, so you don't have to go though all the posts to figure out what has been done or changed:

Try This:
1. Soft reset.
2. Remove all email from Outbox folder (move to a different folder). Then send/receive. Replace outgoing mail back in the Outbox folder and send/receive again.
3. Delete all outgoing mail, then try to send a new message.
4. Ensure your PPC is the only device and/or PC using a third party app to access Gmail. Gmail seems to be a monogamous kind of gal... Let me explain: I have noticed that Gmail does not work well when you use it with more than one third party app and/or device. Example: Gmail has trouble when you try to check your mail from Pocket Outlook on your PPC, then Outlook 2003 at your work computer, and later on from Outlook at your home computer. Gmail performs better when its one app on one device. All other places (work, home, etc…) use the gmail.com internet GUI.
5. Retype passwords for both incoming and outgoing mail settings. (There may be a typo)

My Gmail.com Settings:
1. POP Download= Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on

My PPC Gmail Settings:
1. Email address= username@gmail.com
2. Your name= “your name”
3. User name= recent:username@gmail.com
4. Password= “password”
5. Save Password checkbox= Checked
6. Account type= POP3
7. Name= Gmail
8. Incoming mail= pop.gmail.com:995
9. Outgoing mail= smtp.gmail.com:465
10. Domain= gmail.com
11. Connect and check for messages every= 60 minutes
12. Connection= The Internet
13. Only display messages from the last “x” days= 3
14. Require SSL connection checkbox= Checked
15. Outgoing mail requires authentication checkbox= Checked
16. Use separate settings for outgoing mail checkbox= Checked
17. Outgoing Settings- Username= username@gmail.com NOTE: recent: was not used for outgoing mail.
18. Outgoing Settings- Password= “password”
19. Outgoing Settings- Domain= “blank” NOTE: The domain for outgoing mail is left blank intentionally
20. Outgoing Settings- Save Password checkbox= Checked
21. Outgoing Settings- Require SSL for outgoing mail checkbox= Checked
22. Get full copy of message
23. Storage= Store attachments on storage card

Hope something here will help you out.

evq.003,

Thank you so much for all of your help and speedy responses you deserve major props for helping me understand that I have dyslexia. The problem was I had outgoing server setting as stmp.gmail.com instead of smtp.gmail.com. The good news maybe this also helped someone else.

Thanks again.

Greetings,

I realize this thread has got some age to it, but I'm still having seven kinds of trouble with my Gmail, and I wanted to see if there were any new developments.

I have used all of the settings listed in this thread and have had successess and failures (with no apparent cause). Sometimes the settings work, other times they don't.

I've tried every setting I can think of (including those in Gmail) and what ends up happening if I do get it to work is that instead of my messages getting archived in Gmail, they end up in the trash. This happens even with I have the Gmail POP settings to archive the message when downloaded via POP. First, the message doesn't get archived and then when I delete it on my 8525 it gets deleted in Gmail.

Very very frustrating. I've only had the 8525 for a few days and I love it, but doing Gmail mobile in IE Mobile is problematic at best.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

all of this is alot more work than you need to do, when setting up the account on your phone when it asks for how many days you want to check back for, just select how many days you want new mail to stay on your phone....

13. Only display messages from the last “x” days= 3

just change the 3 to however long you want

Kicker

Unfortunately, while your solution works for most POP3 accounts, it does not apply to Gmail. The inbox clearing on the device is handled from the server side and does require the added steps outlined above. A little annoying when the 'x' days option is what we are used to using to control our POP3 accounts (such as Yahoo), where it works like a charm. Oh, well.

hmmm i have gotten mine to stay on the phone for a few days that way....

but when all else fails....get emoze....it lets you select when the email is deleted off the phone, works like push mail and even updates your email contacts in your phone for you automatically when it recieves a new email....it really is an awesome program...

I have had inconsistent results with Gmail using the 'x' days filter alone. It will work for a few days then go back to displaying just mail in its first POP access pass while removing previously-downloaded items from the device inbox. It has something to do with Gmail's handling of POP flags on the mail server end.

I have found that putting 'recent:' at the beginning of the user ID entry keeps mail in the inbox once downloaded and does seem to function properly with the 'x' days filter. As noted above, the first download with the user ID set to recent:username@gmail.com can take a little time, depending on your mail volume and if a time limit filter is set.

Gmail does not support IMAP4 ? Unless you don't care but, am I wrong in thinking POP3 pulls down the mail off the server? Unless you set it to save a copy on the server. At least with IMAP you have the option of using push technology right? And it only pulls down header info.

Gmail works via POP3 using a system of access flagging. Once a message is flagged as having been accessed once, the default is to not download it on subsequent POP accesses. The POP flags can be reset by going to your Gmail account online and changing the POP access settings. A copy of the mail is downloaded to your mobile device but the mail is retained in the server-based mailbox. The effective result is that the device mailbox is emptied on each mail check and only new mail is downloaded. If you want to keep a complete copy of your Gmail inbox on your device, you need to change the default behavior through one of the suggested changes.

If you only want to keep selected mail in your device inbox, I have found the method that works best for me is to create a non-syncing subfolder in the devc=ice inbox account named Saved or something similar and then copying the desired messages into that subfolder. You can still forward and reply to messages in that subfolder but it does not require changing the main folder's default action to retain only new messages on each mail check.

I have moved to nPOPuk as my default email client because it retains some of the threading that is used in the online Gmail client. It isn't a perfect threading system, but does work when the messages are requential in order.

The flag system means that to remove messages from the server, you need to actually delete them, either through the web site or by doing a delete command in the email client. While Gmail uses POP, the flagging gives it some of the behavior of IMAP rather than standard POP.

The bottom line is that this is just plain irritating. I thought when I saw pop3 support that it would behave the way you would expect, but regardless of how you set up your PPC something about it is irritating. It moves your messages into the trash in Gmail one way or removes the messages off of your device another way. You can use this "work around" or this "work around". Even the mobile sight isn't great. This is one of those times when I wish I were a programmer

Have you tried installing the Gmail mobile app that they have developed to see if that suits your needs better than WM Messaging or the Gmail mobile portal? I believe the site to visit for it is gmail.com/app where it will first verify your device/OS. Not all devices are supported so I cannot give you a first-hand report on its usability, but it is probably worth checking out.

The very simple and painless alternative of editing my user ID in the messaging inbox so that 'recent:' is added at its beginning seems to be a stable solution and required almost no effort to institutute. And I am not a programmer, either, just a user who has dealt through the years with many options chosen by software and site designers that I have found puzzling but managable through fairly simple expedients. However, check the Gmail mobile app and let us know if it is a better solution.

I have not been able to get the mobile Java based solution to work on my AT&T 8525. That is not to say that others won't be more successful. I wasn't overly excited about that solution anyway to be honest. The problem I have when using the 'recent:username@gmail' option is that when I delete a message from my PDA it is moved to the trash instead of the archives, and when I empty the deleted items on my PDA, it deletes those message permanenly in Gmail.I am using the following solution:I created a second Gmail account called usernameforward@gmail.com. I turned on POP access for both accounts, and have the messages forwarded from my primary account to the usernameforward account, and use it as the pop server. I use my primary account as the smtp server. You could do the same settup using Yahoo or Hotmail, but only if you pay for pop access.
