I have had inconsistent results with Gmail using the 'x' days filter alone. It will work for a few days then go back to displaying just mail in its first POP access pass while removing previously-downloaded items from the device inbox. It has something to do with Gmail's handling of POP flags on the mail server end.

I have found that putting 'recent:' at the beginning of the user ID entry keeps mail in the inbox once downloaded and does seem to function properly with the 'x' days filter. As noted above, the first download with the user ID set to recent:username@gmail.com can take a little time, depending on your mail volume and if a time limit filter is set.
