most stable version of ActiveSync for PPC2002(3.0) ??

I've noticed some trouble with sync with some versions of ActiveSync using xpSP2home and PPC2002(3.0) on IPAC3635 ...would I be better to install an older version (I have back to 3.5) or go for 4.2 on a clean install ?
