This question has been answered if different ways but I though I add few things.

How do I keep from beign charged for connecting to internet when attempting to connect to wifi?

this is agood question cuz if you're already connected to your wifi and while surfing you loose you connection the device is designed to connect to what ever it can and will auto switch to GPRS/EDGE/3G and then you start to be charged.

There are several ways to prevent this from happening:
a) call to the provider let them no you do not want you device getting a data connection and do what ever they need to do to make it happen.
If you a cingular customer, talk to Tech support (Cingular ANS dept) and tell them to remove all your APN's (isp.cingular & pdpwap) off you profile. They do this all the time in reverce to fix data connection issues with ppl profiles.

b) delete/modify you connection settings. Or better yet, make a new one and set it as the default connection setting. That way in the event you have to use the provider's connection you'll all ways have it and don't have to call to have them to walk you through setting it all back up which can take some time to do.

this all you need to do the set up a new one and make it you default internet connection setting.

1) Tap Start > Settings > Connection tab > Connections icon > Advanced tab

2) Tap Select Networks button (in the connections screen)
3) Tap New button (in the network managment screen)
4) Enter a name for the connection (like WiFi)
5) Tap Proxy Settings tab , put a check in " This network connects to the Internet" setting
6) Tap OK at top right of screen
7) Now just select your new connection from the drop down menu under the area for "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using: "
