WM5 (windows mobile 5) Does scan for wifi all the time if WiFi is enabled (sort-of), so as far as I know you can't just start and stop a scan. If your or you buddy's device is not seeing an available network(s) that you know are there, select network card to bring up a list of available wifi netowrk... this is how:

1) go to Comm Manager , tap the wifi button to turn on wifi
(for HTC devices (8128,8525,MDA,...) it the button on the side with a Target symbol with waves comming of it)
2) Tap Settings (right soft key) , select Wireless Lan (wifi)
3) Tap Menu (left soft key) , select Network Cards

and poof ... you'll see all the wifi connections that you aren't seeing
This list will refresh every 7-10 sec (this is what i mean by auto scanning)

4) From the list, Tap & Hold on the desired connection then, tap Connect
5) Cross your fingers

... hope that helps
