Captain Pooka,
Let me answer the easier question first: The average sales rep, believes WiFi and Cingular data/internet access are one in the same and the terms are interchangeable, therefore, they will tell you WiFi access is billable. Or, they are trying to sell you a data plan. Either case, they are wrong. Cingular does NOT charge/bill you for WiFi connection. Access to wireless home networks and WiFi Hotspots are NOT billed by Cingular. But I recommend buying the unlimited data plan anyway, it saves a lot of headache and "what if's".
As far as Hotmail is concerned, if you are using Pocket Outlook for Hotmail, a couple of options you should check: Go to your messaging app then Menu> Tools> Options> Accounts> and Edit your Hotmail account. Tap "Next" until you get to the page with the "Options" button (Page 4/4) and tap "Options". On the “check messages interval” option make sure the time is set short enough that it will have time to check you mail during your WiFi connection. Mine is set to check every 60 minutes. If it is left unchecked, it will only send/receive on demand. On the “connection type” option, be sure it is set to your WiFi network. I selected “Internet” for my connection because I have unlimited data with Cingular. The “Check mail from ‘x’ number of days” option is your preference. I have mine unchecked, but I used to have it set for 10 days. It works both ways. The “message header” option should be set to "download entire message". Save your changes.
If you are still having issues, I would suggest try using the MSN app that came installed on the phone. It seems pretty friendly. Just enter your Hotmail info... I think.
Another option is to beta test Windows live. See the details posted by Linley Meslier here.
