have concluded it's not the security | | Hi manperez, thanks for your reply.
I have concluded the problem cannot be with security. Not only did I remove the WEP key, but also when I still had the WEP key and purposely tried to type in the wrong key just to see what would happen, Windows Mobile gave me a message saying that the key was wrong.
Evidently, the key gets passed from the router to the adapter without a hitch, but this is a separate issue than the adapter getting permission to access the Internet through the router.
So I would assume the key was right when I typed it in as best I could and got to see the adapter try to connect to my router, only to have it "X" out as "unavailable".
After searching through a few forums, I believe I have narrowed down the possibilities to:
1. An incompatibility issue with the 8125's built-in wifi adapter and the Netgear MR814v2 802.11b router. Someone posted on another forum (or maybe this one) to that effect. I'll try it out with a G router and report back. Also, the random neighbor whose wifi I could connect to was a G router as well. Nice little utility called Wi-Fi Companion, which I found on Handango, lets you know if you're accessing a B or G wifi.
2. Something's wrong with my adapter's ability to assign/accept (?) an IP and DNS. I found another good utility called vxIPConfig and it shows you the adapter's IP address, DHCP server, etc. Also shows MAC addr which Windows Mobile does not let you see. I'll try and see if my router can pickup based only on the MAC address.
3. Installation problem. I just got the device today. My Windows Mobile installation didn't exactly go so smoothly, but I didn't think anything of it until now. Will try a hard reset and start from scratch.
Wish me luck. If anyone has connected to a Netgear MR814v2 802.11b, let me know. |
