You're right so I got rid of the connection to the Cingular GPRS and it does talk to my access point and I've evolved to the next issue,

New error...whether I am trying to access some of the default favorites or surf yahoo,com , cnn.com etc...
I get the error "The Page cannot be found. Check the name and try again.".
Do I have to make a DNS entry somewhere? I'm using comcast broadband...
