Ok, this is actually an
invention to prevent Laptops from being stolen, but imagine since electronics get smaller, it could be for Pocket PCs soon too. Three students from Simon Fraser University, came up with a cool idea to prevent the thefts of laptops. The way it works is there is a device that attaches to the laptop and a separate device you carry with you - possibly on a keychain. If your laptop is moved, an alarm sounds on the device you are carrying.
The alarm sequence is only activated once you walk away from the unit, so that prevents the alarm from sounding if you are in the vicinity.
"Chris Mitchell, Matt Brown and Hani Mehrpouyan had an idea.... The germ of it came from friends who had tales of woe of having their laptops stolen. Bells went off in the minds of these three 20-something whiz kids....
After much brainstorming, mind bending and pencil sharpening, the trio came up with a device that they hope will foil laptop thieves."
Scale that down a bit and it might just be the type of thing you could attach to the back of your Pocket PC to detect if it has been removed from the cradle or where ever you left it.
